The secret key is used to apply an extra level of protection to your backups. Think of it as a password or PIN for your backup.
It is highly recommended that you always use a secret key when you create your backups, and importantly to remember the secret key as this will be required to restore the backup.
Please note, if you forget the secret key for a backup, then you will no longer be able to restore the backup.
